#31 Make Water Kefir

Sounds crazy...tastes good!

These are the grains. I ordered a batch of it off of ebay and was sent about 1 tsp or so of it. You then have to "grow" your kefir in a mixture of filtered water and sugar or sweetener of some type.  It cost me $2.99 for a small batch, which will continue to proliferate as long as I "feed" them. We mix 4 cups filtered water with 1/3 c agave, the grains and fresh or dried fruit slices (depending on what flavor we want it). We have used ginger, pear, orange, and pineapple. Water Kefir is a probiotic drink, good for the immune system, great for digestion and a fun drink. Phil loves it and Elias begs for it. It takes about 48 hrs for each batch and once your strain that batch you can begin your next one. Cheap, tasty and fun!

Here are a couple of videos demonstrating how to make water kefir.

#3 on my list

I have a list of 32 things that I want to accomplish this year! I finished my three week cleanse and felt good in that exercise in self control, trying to break some bad habits. #3 on my list is to up my intake of raw foods this year. including more fresh, live juices, more raw veggies and my goal is to increase my energy and improve my immune system!

One of the ways I want to accomplish this goal is to make mondays raw days! Since Phil and I usually cook a lot on weekends and I eat more than my fair share of junk...monday is a good day to clean the palate!

Today I made Elias and I grapefruit juice in the citrus juicer first thing, mid morning I made a green juice (cucumber, spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, pear and pineapple) and for lunch I made a version of this yummy yummy meal.  I made myself a green smoothie for an afternoon snack (spinach, frozen raspberries, frozen blueberries, banana, water, flax seed and chia seed). I snacked on walnuts and raisins and for dinner I ate a LARGE salad with homemade dressing!

new year

i am ready to start new this year. i have to say last year was a bit of a rough year in several ways for us. i had also fallen off the wagon...nutritionally. i love new beginnings and am really motivated to get a lot accomplished this year.
I made a list of 32 things i want to get done this year (and i think i am going to document them here as i accomplish them) . Most of them are not huge endeavors, however I am need to get my rump in gear with my diet. I ended 2010 eating lots of cheese and white sugar while celebrating the holidays and felt like poo for it!

So...one of the items on my "32 things" was to begin and complete a 3 week cleanse. I have cut out:
1. dairy
2. caffeine
3. gluten
4. sugar

and i have increased my raw foods, water, alkaline foods and exercise!

It's been 10 days now and I feel pretty good about everything...no cravings. Here's a rough outline of what i am eating daily:
Breakfast: hot herbal tea with stevia, oatmeal (oats, chia seeds, flax, frozen or fresh fruit) or fruit
Mid-morning: fresh green juice (cucumbers, parsley, kale or spinach, celery, apples, maybe an orange or ginger, romaine lettuce)
Lunch : usually leftovers from the night before (vegan) or a large salad or other raw food
Mid-afternoon: green smoothie (spinach, banana, flax, water, frozen fruit and stevia)
Dinner: Homemade vegan dish

I have pre-ordered the book Crazy, Sexy Diet and will get it on my kindle on the 17th of this month. I follow Kris' website and Vlogs and think she is really inspiring and offering real hope to a lot of sick people. I am excited to read the book!
